Magor Rugby earned a hard fought home league win on the weekend versus Trinant RFC to make it four league wins from four.
The visitors struck first with a penalty on 3 minutes (0-3). After a period of feeling each other out, Magor started to assert some dominance defence and continuity with the ball. From an attacking driving lineout it seemed that lock Andy Gully has crashed over, only for the referee to rule a knock on. Minutes later, a weaving run from fullback Josh Griffiths saw him link up with prop Owen Pearson and backrower Lee Cox who finished a team try in the corner, which was awarded a penalty try for a dangerous tackle (7-3). Off the kick off, Trinant gifted the home side a centre field scrum by kicking the ball out on the full and scrum half Jack Firmin sniped and ran half the pitch to score (12-3). A few minutes later forward Tom Cousins scored his first try for the club after some slick team patterns pressured the Trinant defence once more (17-3). Just prior to half time winger Ryan Bedborough scored under the posts to secure the team’s try bonus point (24-3).
The second half saw a fight back from the visitors helped in part by a double yellow card to Magor forwards Tom Cousins and Dan Thomas with the home side down to 13 men for ten minutes. The away side scored a penalty try through a now dominant scrum after the men in black and amber had resisted for a period (24-10). After getting back to a full compliment of players, Magor’s backrow forward Charlie Phelps, on his debut, was then shown a yellow card for a technical offence directed at the team’s collective ill discipline at the breakdown. Trinant went onto score another try and kicked penalty in a tense finish to end the game at 24-20 to the home side, who had to hold on for an entire half, after an impressive opening period. Magor’s tight head prop Owen Pearson was awarded man of the match for his stand out work in the scrum, in support of the ball and in defence.
